Meet the PayU Leadership Team



Laurent le Moal,

PayU - Chief Executive Officer

Laurent was appointed CEO, PayU in January 2016. He is responsible for global operations and brings extensive knowledge of digital payments and high-growth markets to PayU. He concluded an 11-year career at PayPal as Vice-President and General Manager for Continental Europe, where he successfully led the launch of PayPal in Africa, Israel, the Middle-East, and Russia. Laurent started his career as a business analyst at McKinsey, before founding TalentManager in 1999. TalentManager is a leading recruitment software provider and he spent three years growing the business, successfully selling the Italian operation. Laurent holds an MBA from the London Business School and is a graduate of Bocconi University in Italy (CEMS Master, International management).



Aakash Moondhra,

PayU - Chief Financial Officer

A Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary, Moondhra is also an MBA from the Southern Methodist University - Cox School of Business, in the US with Beta Gamma Sigma Honors. Previously, he worked as the CFO of Snapdeal, where he was also responsible for Legal, Corporate Affairs, Internal Controls and Risk. During his time at Snapdeal, Moondhra contributed to their 100X growth in GMV, raised USD 1 billion from marquee investors and closed multiple acquisitions. Over the last 20 years, Moondhra has worked with ANZ Grindlays Bank, Andersen Consulting, AT&T and Bharti Group in various roles and even spent time as an entrepreneur selling readymade kitchens in India.



José Vélez

PayU Latin America - Chief Executive Officer

Vélez studied economics and completed a Masters degree in Computer Science, graduating first in his class. He attended the ECLA programme for Latin American entrepreneurs at the Columbia Business School in New York, with an emphasis on operations and operational excellence. He is one of the founders of Pagosonline – a payments company originally from Colombia, which was later acquired by Naspers and became part of PayU. In 2011, he was selected as an Endeavour Entrepreneur and in 2012 won the MIT’s TR35 Award – a token of recognition for young and innovative entrepreneurs.


Mario Shiliashki

PayU EMEA - Chief Executive Officer

Mario Shiliashki was appointed CEO of PayU EMEA in October 2015. Before joining PayU Mario was Senior Vice President and Group Head of Global Emerging Payments at MasterCard. Prior to MasterCard, Mario was the Managing Director of PayPal in Asia, where he launched PayPal in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Thailand and Vietnam, growing the business to over $100M in revenue. Mario is an advisor to Metamorphic Ventures in NYC and loves helping early stage businesses. In his early career, Mario was an equity analyst at Goldman Sachs and subsequently a strategy consultant at Bain. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Economics from Bryant University.



Raj Kamal

PayU - Global Head of Strategy & Business Development

Raj leads strategy and M&A for PayU across all markets. Prior to joining PayU in July 2015, Raj spent 12 years with McKinsey & Company, culminating his career there with leading McKinsey’s practice on Payments for APAC. He started his career in the civil service in India (Indian Administrative Service), where he spent 8 years. His experience includes strategy, investment, business model & transformation across payments, banking & insurance sectors. Raj holds and MBA from the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad India, and a B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai.



James Caviness 

Vice President & Chief Product Officer

After receiving his Masters degree in 2003, Caviness started working as a Product Manager at PayPal. Working mainly on products as well as in technology and operations, he moved to other financial services companies. This included Xoom – a pioneer in the consumer-oriented digital money transfer market and Progreso Fianciero, before returning to PayPal. Caviness then went on to Trulia where he ran a $20m business for a year.




Aparna Ballakur

Vice President Human Resources

Before joining PayU, Ballakur was Chief People Officer at Flipkart, the e-tail leader in India and a Naspers portfolio company. Her career has revolved around hi-tech and web-related businesses, both start-ups and multi-national companies working globally with companies like Yahoo!, Adobe and McAfee across the US, India, Asia-Pacific and Romania.

BallakurI holds a Batchelor of Engineering (BE) in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. In addition to education in India, she went to Cornell University and Stanford in the US to deepen her knowledge in Strategic Human Resources and Leadership.



Guy Duncan

PayU – Chief Technical Officer

After gaining a BA in Philosophy, Analytical & Mathematics at the University of Nebraska, Duncan started out as Chief Technical Officer and soon after Chief Information Officer at Accutech. There he constructed one of the world’s first platforms for Internet based voting. Duncan remained in the software development and online world, leading the tech development at Valtech, a pioneering company in the technology and digital space, to help clients deliver intuitive customer experiences. He was Product and Technology Officer at Bwin.party – an online gambling company. Besides his tech-oriented career, Duncan recently established his own publishing house Gibraltar Editions where hand-made books are designed and distributed.
